City of Rolla Weekly E-Updates (April 23, 2012)

Watershed run-off
model big hit
at Rolla Earth Day
Anne McClay, Project Coordinator, City of Rolla Public Works Department, uses an interactive watershed run-off model to demonstrate the dangerous effects chemicals and pollutants can have on a community’s streams, rivers and lakes. McClay assisted over 200 students as they used bottled water and spray bottles to simulate how rain washes such pollutants as oil, antifreeze, fertilizer, industrial chemicals and yard waste into nearby creeks, streams and other bodies of water   during the annual Rolla Earth Day Celebration on Friday, April 20 at Missouri S&T’s Havener Center.
McClay will be using the model at various community events, schools and functions to teach and educate folks about the harmful effects chemicals and other pollutants can have on the community’s water quality.

Rolla Downtown
Farmer’s Market
open every Tuesday
The Rolla Downtown Farmer’s Market, which opened on Tuesday, April 17 in the City’s Downtown Festival Lot (lower parking lot by Rolla City Hall), will be open from 7 a.m. until 12-noon each Tuesday throughout the growing season.
The Farmer’s Market is coordinated by Roy Fiscus and Wilma Bingham, and spots are available for vendors to sell their items, but they must be locally grown or made products/produce (Phelps County).
No flea market, yard sale type items will be permitted. All spots are first come, first served. The cost to host a booth is $2 per day, which is given to the organizers the day the vendors are there.
For additional information, please contact Roy Fiscus at 341-8045 or Wilma Bingham at 364-5544.

Town Hall Meeting on
Heroin Awareness
April 24
With the recent surge in Heroin use, addiction and Heroin related deaths, the Phelps County Child Advocacy Network, Prevention Consultants of Missouri, and the Rolla Police Department would like to invite all interested community members to attend an important town hall meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, at Rolla Technical Center’s Board Room, to learn just how destructive the use of Heroin can be to an individual, a family, and a community.
The Rolla Police Department estimates 24 deaths in the last 36 months in Phelps County, with hundreds of overdoses and Heroin related arrests since 2010. The Heroin epidemic has arrived in Rolla and in Phelps County.
According to Jamie Myers, Director of Prevention Consultants of Missouri, “There are bad people bringing a terrible, addicting drug to our community that has already killed several young people.”
“This is a problem that demands a response from all parts of our community to intervene and prevent. Parents, schools, churches, law enforcement, health services, neighborhood watch organizations, and employers all have a role in successfully dealing with this problem.”
Please plan to attend this important Town Hall Meeting to learn how you can become more proactive in this battle against one of the most harmful drugs to hit the streets.
Learn how you can protect your child and the children in your life.
If you have a loved one who is addicted to Heroin, learn how you can seek treatment.
The town hall is open to any interested person at no charge but seating is limited so plan to arrive early.
