Mayor Bill Jenks, III |
This year’s holiday season started a little
early from a shopping standpoint, but for many the Rolla Christmas Parade (Dec.
1) also seems to help kick off the Christmas holidays. And the lighted stars along
the 10th Street Bridge and Bishop Avenue remind us the holidays are
upon us.
In case you missed seeing Santa at the Rolla
Christmas Parade on Saturday, he will
also be making a guest appearances for individual and family photos at The
Centre, (located at 1200 North Holloway Street), on Thursday, Dec. 6 from 4
p.m. to 6 p.m. Collins Photography will be available to take professional
pictures with packages at various prices. A beautiful holiday backdrop will be
provided for the photo session next to the fireplace at The Centre. For more
information, please call The Centre at 341-2386.
Be
sure to also check out the beautiful Christmas in the Park Light Display in
Lions Club Park (located on State Route 63 South), which will be open from Dec.
14 through Dec. 22. The annual event is hosted by the Rolla Lioness Club and
features displays from over 50 organizations, businesses and churches. Admission
to this expansive Christmas light extravaganza is free, and donations are
accepted to support scholarships for students in the local area. Hours are Sunday
thru Thursday from 6-9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 6-10 p.m. To inquire
about putting up a light display, please call the Rolla Lions Club at 364-4386.
The retail stores, shops and restaurants seem
to be getting a lot of traffic this holiday season. Sales tax revenues for the
City are up 21.7% in November ($286,289) compared to November 2011 – the
highest November figures in the past five years. Fiscal year-to-date (October
and November) sales tax is up 7.2% over 2011. The City anticipates another year
with lots of fluctuation in the monthly sales tax remittance from the Missouri
Department of Revenue. The City’s budget projects 1-2% total growth through
Fiscal Year 2013.
