City of Rolla Weekend E-Updates (Aug. 10, 2012)

Mom’s Special Day at
SplashZone, Aug. 12
If you haven’t yet made plans for next Sunday, Aug. 12, it is Mom’s Special Day at SplashZone, Rolla’s favorite outdoor water park. On Aug. 12 from noon to 6 p.m., all moms get in free with a child’s admission ($4.50).
SplashZone, which is open seven days a week, is located on 14th Street next to the Ber Juan Tennis Complex and across from The Centre (1200 N. Holloway St.). Hours Monday through Friday are noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

Rolla Planning and Zoning
Commission Meeting
set for Aug. 14
The next Rolla Planning & Zoning Commission meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 5:30 p.m. in the Rolla City Hall – Council Chambers, 901 N. Elm St.
In addition to the approval of the May 8, 2012 P&Z Commission meeting, there will be a report on City Council actions at the Aug. 6 City Council meeting when a resolution was passed supporting the Country Hills Affordable Housing Project through MHDC.
There will also be a public hearing on a request to revise Exhibit I of Pebble Stone Planned Unit Development (Forness), and a report from the Chairperson, committees or staff regarding the following:
A.   Board of Adjustment met on August 2, 2012 and approved a request to allow an off premise sign within 1000 feet of residential zoning, to be used as a billboard.
B.   General overview on possible projects and upcoming Planning and Zoning request.

RPD to crack down
on impaired drivers
during month of August
The Rolla Police Department will be cracking down on impaired drivers by conducting two sobriety checkpoints during the month of August 2012.
Law enforcement efforts will be increased in an endeavor to reduce the deaths and serious injuries caused by impaired drivers. Those caught drinking and driving could lose their license, money, and freedom.

City widens 10th Street
from Hwy. 63 to
Spring Avenue
The City of Rolla Street Department recently finished a project to widen 10th Street from Hwy. 63 to Spring Avenue. The last phase of the project included the construction of an additional right turn lane onto Hwy. 63 that will greatly improve traffic flow and safety at this busy intersection.
The City greatly appreciates the patience, assistance and cooperation of the public throughout the course of this important project.

Rolla City Council
Mtg., Aug. 20
The next Rolla City Council meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Rolla City Hall, 901 N. Elm Street.
Rolla City Council meetings are ordinarily held the first and third Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. except when there is a conflict with an observed holiday.

Budget Workshops
set for Aug. 27 & 29
at Rolla City Hall
The Rolla community is invited to attend a series of City budget workshops scheduled for Monday, Aug. 27 and Wednesday, Aug. 29 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Rolla City Hall (901 North Elm St.).
The budget workshops will provide the Rolla City Council, City staff and members of the community an opportunity to review and discuss the City of Rolla’s 2012-2013 fiscal year budget, which officially begins Oct. 1.
Public hearings to discuss and provide input on the 2012-2013 City budget will be held during the Sept. 5 and Sept. 17 Rolla City Council meetings, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Rolla City Hall.

International Idol
Talent Competition
auditions, Sept. 6
Do you sing, dance, rap, act, or play a musical instrument? Talented community members (all ages and acts are welcome) are invited to audition for the International Idol competition on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Havener Center, Meramec Room, on the Missouri S&T campus.
The final competition will be held during the 3rd Annual Celebration of Nations event on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Downtown Bandshell (located at the corner of 9th and Oak Street.) Group and individual prizes will be awarded.

Operation Neighborhood
Clean-up set for Nov. 2
The 5th annual “Operation Neighborhood Clean-up” will be held on Friday, Nov. 2 throughout the Rolla community in designated, high priority areas. The selection of these properties will be determined by the City of Rolla Police Department and the Rolla Area Ministerial Alliance.
All volunteers are asked to attend the welcome gathering at 6:30 a.m. at Greentree Christian Church Youth Center located at 801 East 10th Street. A complimentary continental breakfast will be provided. The clean-up will take place from 7 a.m. to 12-noon.
The entire community is invited to participate in this beautification effort, which is once again being coordinated by the Rolla Area Ministerial Alliance and the Rolla Police Department.
Operation Neighborhood Clean-up is an opportunity for residents to partner with the Rolla Area Ministerial Alliance, community churches, and the Rolla Police Department to enhance a sense of community, well being, pride and property values among the neighborhoods where the clean up is conducted.
The clean-up effort will involve limited tree trimming, hedge trimming, and the removal of brush piles, leaves, household items and trash. Rolla Downtown
Farmer’s Market
open every Tuesday
The Rolla Downtown Farmer’s Market is open and operating under the new shade structure in the lower parking lot of Rolla City Hall from 7 a.m. until 12-noon each Tuesday throughout the growing season.
The Farmer’s Market is coordinated by Roy Fiscus and Wilma Bingham, and spots are available for vendors to sell their items, but they must be locally grown or made products/produce (Phelps County).
No flea market, yard sale type items will be permitted. All spots are first come, first served. The cost to host a booth is $2 per day, which is given to the organizers the day the vendors are there.
