Venture Crew
installs 500
stormwater inlet
markers
Members of the Phelps County Venture Crew #84 volunteer their time and talent working in five different zones and four separate groups to help the City of Rolla’s Public Works Department install over 500 stormwater inlet markers on Saturday, May 12 in the downtown area. Pictured installing a red, stainless steel ‘No Dumping – Drains to Streams’ marker on the corner of Pine Street and Vichy Road are (front row, l to r): Forrest Brown, Madelyne Bequette, Robert Block and Gene Bequette, Venture Crew Advisor.

Phelps County Venture Crew #84 members Allie Burns, (left) and Elizabeth Johnson, install a red, stainless steel stormwater inlet marker on a curb near 13th and Pine Streets. The effort was lead by Anne McClay, Project Coordinator, Public Works Department, and several Venture Crew members and advisors, who placed 500 markers on stormwater inlets along the streets from 18th Street to 10th Street and Hwy. 63 to Forum Drive.

Venture Crew Advisor Bob Block, left, prepares to install a red stormwater inlet marker on 10th Street. Also pictured (l to r) are: Susan Wrasmann, Master Naturalist, and Healthy Yards for Clear Streams and Diane Block, Phelps County Venture Crew #84 Committee Chairman. There are over 4,300 stormwater inlets located along 100 miles of streets in the City of Rolla, and this initial effort is the first phase of a multi-year program designed to involve and educate the community regarding the importance of not dumping chemicals, pollutants and yard waste into storm drain inlets.

Members of the Phelps County Venture Crew #84 wear safety vests while installing over 100 stormwater inlet red, stainless steel markers around Ber Juan Park, SplashZone, 14th Street and Holloway Streets. Pictured (l to r) are: Phelps County Venture Crew Associate Advisors Dean Smith and Glen Matlock; Mark Mueller, Venture Crew member who is a Junior at Missouri University of Science and Technology, and Mark’s father, Mike Mueller, Venture Crew Associate Advisor.  The Stormwater Inlet Marker program is collaboration among the City of Rolla, Phelps County Venture Crew, Meramec Hills Master Naturalists, and Stream Team #3713. The Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has provided partial funding for this project under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act.

RPD to participate
in Click It or Ticket
May 21 – June 3
The Rolla Police Department will be joining with statewide law enforcement May 21 – June 3 for an aggressive “Click It or Ticket” mobilization to crack down on Missouri’s seat belt violations.
Seven out of 10 people killed in Missouri traffic crashes are unbuckled. And even with the advancements in automobile safety and education on the important of seat belt use, Missouri’s seat belt use has remained relatively unchanged in the last six years and consistently below the national average.
Missouri has 79 percent seat belt use, which is well below the national average of 85 percent. Teens and pick-up truck drivers are among those least likely to buckle up at 67 and 66 percent.
“Every day someone dies in a crash in Missouri because they weren’t buckled up,” said Sgt. Tim Mayfield. “We will be pulling out all the stops to ensure motorists are buckling up.”
Seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.
Buckle Up and Arrive Alive. For information on Missouri seatbelt usage, visit www.saveMOlives.com.

Rolla Downtown
Farmer’s Market
open every Tuesday
The Rolla Downtown Farmer’s Market is open and operating under the new shade structure in the lower parking lot of Rolla City Hall from 7 a.m. until 12-noon each Tuesday throughout the growing season.
The Farmer’s Market is coordinated by Roy Fiscus and Wilma Bingham, and spots are available for vendors to sell their items, but they must be locally grown or made products/produce (Phelps County).
No flea market, yard sale type items will be permitted. All spots are first come, first served. The cost to host a booth is $2 per day, which is given to the organizers the day the vendors are there.
For additional information, please contact Roy Fiscus at 341-8045 or Wilma Bingham at 364-5544.

Paving of Forum Dr.
from 18th to
Old St. James Rd.
continues
The City of Rolla Public Works Department is underway with the reconstruction for the eventual paving of Forum Drive from 18th Street to Old St. James Road. The project should be completed sometime this summer.
The first phase of the project includes extensive milling (removing several inches of asphalt), and then excavating materials. After removing the materials, gravel will be placed on the road surface, and the road will be paved with five inches of asphalt.
Detour signs are posted in the construction area, indicating lane closures and alternate routes. During this time the City appreciates the assistance and cooperation of the public.
For more information, please call the Public Works Department at 364-8659 or visit www.rollacity.org.

RPD conducting sobriety
checkpoints in May
The Rolla Police Department will be cracking down on impaired drivers by conducting one to two sobriety checkpoints during the month of May 2012.
Law enforcement efforts will be increased in an endeavor to reduce the deaths and serious injuries caused by impaired drivers.
Those caught drinking and driving could lose their license, money and freedom.
