Burn
ban back
in
effect
in
Phelps County
Due
to the continued extremely dry and drought-like conditions in Rolla and Phelps
County, the fire hazard for the area continues to be severe. City of Rolla Fire
& Rescue, and other Fire Departments in Phelps County are again joining
together to announce and enforce an open burning ban.
With
the extreme weather conditions, effective immediately, by the order of Robert
Williams, Fire Chief, open burning in Rolla and other cities and towns in
Phelps County will not be permitted until such time it is safe to lift the burn
ban.
“The
two thunder storms we had about a week ago helped offset the fire hazard to a certain
degree, but unfortunately they did not make a long-lasting impact on the
draught-like conditions we are facing in Rolla and Phelps County,” said Chief
Williams. “There is unfortunately very little rain projected in the immediate
forecast, and it doesn’t look like we will see much relief for quite awhile.”
For more information, please feel free
to contact Robert Williams, Fire Chief or Ron Smith, Training Officer at
(573)364-3989.
Army volunteers
construct pavilion
at Veterans Memorial Park
The
completion of yet another phase of Veterans Memorial Park in Rolla is nearly
finished as the final touches are made on the construction of a 61-foot-long by
25-foot-wide pavilion that began in October 2011.
Working
for several hours in blistering 100 degree-plus temperatures from June 29
through July 3, 2012 several U.S. Army soldiers from Fort Leonard Wood, and
First Sergeant Yale Barkefelt with the 77th Engineer Vertical
Company at FLW, volunteered their time and talent to construct the highly
noticeable 10-foot-high pavilion that is located on the south side of Veterans
Memorial Park on Southview Drive in Rolla. Funding for the materials to
construct the pavilion were provided through donations received by the South
Central Regional Veterans Group (S.C.R.V.G.).
The
project, which was coordinated and managed by Jerry Bumpus, a long-time Rolla
resident, retired First Sergeant with the U.S. Army, and a member of the South
Central Regional Veterans Group and The Retired Enlisted Association, began in
October 2011 when a concrete slab was first poured for the pavilion. The cost
of the concrete was generously funded 100% through donations by Rolla and
Phelps County residents. The gravel for the foundation was donated by Capitol
Quarry, and Daniels Trucking donated the use of their trucks and equipment to
haul and place the gravel. The concrete was also purchased at a significant
discount from Rolla Concrete. In addition, the forming and preparation for the
concrete slab was completed by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department,
including Simon Yoakum, Foreman, several Parks and Recreation members and Jerry
Bumpus. Several members of Labor’s Local Union #840 poured, leveled and
finished the concrete slab at no cost.
When
the pavilion is totally finished it will be open to the public, and made
available for a nominal rental fee through the City’s Parks and Recreation
Department for family gatherings, reunions, BBQs, picnics and special events.
It will be especially convenient during inclement weather.
“The
construction of the pavilion was made possible by a lot of generous individuals
and groups who provided the necessary funds, materials, equipment, talent and
sweat equity to get the job done,” said Bumpus. “The community support and
collaboration was amazing, and reflects the depth of patriotic spirit and
support of U.S. veterans in South Central Missouri.”

City
urges property
owners
to display
address
numbers
The
City of Rolla Fire and Rescue is conducting their annual business safety inspections,
and one of the items they check for is a visible and conspicuous address number
to identify the location of each business.
By
properly displaying address numerals that contrast with the color of the
dwelling, fire, safety and medical responders can more quickly identify a
property when responding to an emergency call, or during other safety or
medical related matters.
“When
lives are at risk, visible property address numbers really count,” said Fire
Chief Robert Williams, City of Rolla Fire & Rescue. “And emergency services
personnel don’t need to be wasting your time guessing at addresses.”
In
addition, property owners who have recently remodeled or re-sided their homes,
or whose address numbers are not visible, need to ensure their street or
property address is easily identifiable somewhere on the structure and visible
from the street.
A violation of the requirements of this
Ordinance shall constitute an offense which could be punishable by a fine not
to exceed $50.
This
requirement is in keeping with the City’s Ordinance relating to Chapter 6 (Sec.
6-1, Article 1 – In General) “Street
numbers required of property owners on dwelling or structure.”
If you have any questions relating to these
requirements, please contact Rolla City Administration at 426-6948.
