City of Rolla Weekly E-Updates (May 6, 2013)

Community-wide
events abound
month of May
Mayor Bill Jenks, III
While you are busy making plans and commitments for upcoming graduation ceremonies, prom, family gatherings, and all the other significant events you have on your calendars, please make room for a few more that you don’t want to miss.
Although it is held just once every two years, the City of Rolla Public Works Department invites you to attend a free Public Works Day Celebration on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the City’s Downtown Festival Park next to City Hall – rain or shine. This year’s theme for the annual Public Works Week, which runs from May 19-25, is “Because of Public Works.” In addition to free brochures, coloring books, balloons, stickers and comic books, there will also be an inflatable playground for children. The event will also feature the Public Works Mascot “P.W. Paws” and visitors will be encouraged to get their free photo taken. Free popcorn will also be provided.
Participating in the event are the Public Works Divisions of Streets, Traffic, Wastewater, and Engineering, along with the City’s Parks and Recreation and Environmental Services Department. Rolla Municipal Utilities is also participating in the event. City of Rolla and RMU staff will be on-site to demonstrate equipment, and answer questions. Visitors will be able to learn about water and wastewater treatment and distribution, how a sanitary sewer line is televised, watch computerized mapping system retrieve information, and climb inside various pieces of heavy equipment. For more information, please call the Public Works Department at (573) 364-8659 or visit www.rollacity.org.
Later this month, the entire community is also invited to attend the an Open House at the City of Rolla’s new Environmental Services facility located at 2301 McCutchen Drive on Wednesday, May 22 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event kicks off with a ribbon cutting ceremony coordinated by the Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce and Chamber Ambassadors,  followed by tours of the facility and light refreshments.

Thanks to a very generous donation of materials, labor and time by the Phelps County Monument Company and Gabriele Crane, Inc., a new P.O.W./M.I.A. monument is the latest edition to the ever expanding Veterans Memorial Park, located on Southveiw Drive in Rolla.
The project is a partnership among members of the South Central Regional Veterans Group (S.C.R.V.G.), the Phelps County Monument Company, Gabriele Crane, the City’s Public Works Department, and Parks and Recreation Department.
(Pictured in front of the new P.O.W./M.I.A. memorial at Veterans Memorial Park are (l to r): Larry Anson, owner of the Phelps County Monument Company and Gene Gabriele, II with Gabriele Crane, Inc.. The black granite monument was engraved by Anson, and put into place with a large crane provided by Gabriele. The entire process took about three hours to complete.

“In addition to thanking Larry Anson, owner of the Phelps County Monument Company, and Gene Gabriele, II, Director of Operations for Gabriele Crane, Inc., we would also like to express our appreciation and gratitude to Jeff Gresham and the Rolla Public Works Crew for preparing the site for the monument,” said Jerry Bumpus. “And we would also like to thank Simon Yoakum, Parks and Recreation Foreman, and all of the City’s Parks and Recreation crew that have helped immensely with the maintenance, preparation and up-keep of the park throughout the year.”
The S.C.R.V.G. is now taking applications for the sale of engraved memorial bricks which will be placed along the walkway to the P.O.W./M.I.A. memorial in the 11-acre Veterans Memorial Park.

RPD to crack down
on impaired drivers
May 2-13
With prom and graduation season just around the corner, Missouri law enforcement wants to make sure Missouri youth are celebrating safe and sober. The Rolla Police Department will join other Missouri law enforcement agencies to crack down on drunk driving May 2-13.
It is illegal for someone under 21 to possess or consume alcohol in Missouri, yet youth make up a significant proportion of drunk drivers causing traffic crashes on Missouri roadways. Missouri has a Zero Tolerance Law. If you are under 21, your license will be suspended if you’re caught driving with even a trace of alcohol in your system.
Consequences of drunk driving include jail time, loss of their driver licenses, or being sentenced to use ignition interlocks. Insurance rates go up. Other financial hits include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job or job prospects. When family, friends and co-workers find out, violators can also face tremendous personal embarrassment and humiliation.
“Driving drunk is simply not worth all the consequences,’ said Sgt. Tim Mayfield. “Zero tolerance means zero chances: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
Between 2010 and 2012, 77 people were killed and 363 seriously injured in Missouri roadway crashes involving an impaired driver under the age of 21.

RPD to conduct
sobriety checkpoints
month of May
The Rolla Police Department will be cracking down on impaired drivers by conducting one to two sobriety checkpoints during the month of May 2013.
Law enforcement efforts will be increased in an endeavor to reduce the deaths and serious injuries caused by impaired drivers. Those caught drinking and driving could lose their license, money, and freedom.
