City of Rolla Weekly E-Updates (Dec. 3, 2012)

Rolla Christmas
parade kicks off
holiday festivities
Mayor Bill Jenks, III
This year’s holiday season started a little early from a shopping standpoint, but for many the Rolla Christmas Parade (Dec. 1) also seems to help kick off the Christmas holidays. And the lighted stars along the 10th Street Bridge and Bishop Avenue remind us the holidays are upon us.
In case you missed seeing Santa at the Rolla Christmas Parade on Saturday,  he will also be making a guest appearances for individual and family photos at The Centre, (located at 1200 North Holloway Street), on Thursday, Dec. 6 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Collins Photography will be available to take professional pictures with packages at various prices. A beautiful holiday backdrop will be provided for the photo session next to the fireplace at The Centre. For more information, please call The Centre at 341-2386.
Be sure to also check out the beautiful Christmas in the Park Light Display in Lions Club Park (located on State Route 63 South), which will be open from Dec. 14 through Dec. 22. The annual event is hosted by the Rolla Lioness Club and features displays from over 50 organizations, businesses and churches. Admission to this expansive Christmas light extravaganza is free, and donations are accepted to support scholarships for students in the local area. Hours are Sunday thru Thursday from 6-9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 6-10 p.m. To inquire about putting up a light display, please call the Rolla Lions Club at 364-4386.
The retail stores, shops and restaurants seem to be getting a lot of traffic this holiday season. Sales tax revenues for the City are up 21.7% in November ($286,289) compared to November 2011 – the highest November figures in the past five years. Fiscal year-to-date (October and November) sales tax is up 7.2% over 2011. The City anticipates another year with lots of fluctuation in the monthly sales tax remittance from the Missouri Department of Revenue. The City’s budget projects 1-2% total growth through Fiscal Year 2013.

Shop and dine
locally during
holiday season
With the holiday season just weeks away, folks are beginning to make plans for traditional family gift-giving, get-togethers, celebrations and one of the most special times of the year.
The City of Rolla would like to encourage everyone to please try to patronize and frequent our local restaurants (there are many to choose from), specialty shops, retail outlets, and businesses that rely heavily on the holiday season for a large portion of their business.
As Rolla continues to grow and prosper the number and variety of dining options and retail choices has improved significantly. Our local economy depends largely on these sectors of society, and we will all benefit from keeping our dollars locally invested.

City departments
offer choices
for leaf pick-up
The City of Rolla’s Environmental Services Department will continue to offer the pick-up of bagged leaves through Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
To receive this service, the leaves must be placed in brown paper biodegradable yard waste bags, which can be purchased at a reasonable price at many stores in the area. We also ask that you place your bags to the curb by 6 a.m. so our equipment operators can pick them up on your normal collection day.
Please be aware that this service will be suspended from Dec. 15, 2012 through March 3, 2013. Collection of yard waste (leaves, grass, clippings and small sticks) in brown paper bags will resume on Monday, March 4, 2013.
Residents wishing to dispose of these materials during the winter suspension can use the compost site located at the end of McCutchen Drive just north of the Rolla Recycling Center on Old St. James Road. Residents may also arrange for a special pick up for a fee.
