City of Rolla Weekend Updates (March 16, 2012)

St. Pat’s Parade
set for March 17
The 104th Annual St. Pat’s Day Parade, one of the oldest and most celebrated St. Pat’s Parades in the state of Missouri, will be held Saturday, March 17 at 11 a.m. on Pine Street in downtown Rolla. After the parade, the first of four FREE concerts will begin at 1 p.m. in the Rolla Downtown Bandshell located at the corner of 9th and oak Streets near the railroad tracks. Come out and make sure St. Pat's ends with a bang, at a FREE Chevelle concert! The headliner takes the stage at 3:30 p.m. Terrapin Moon, a Grateful Dead tribute band, plays at 1 p.m., followed by Middle Class Rut. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The show is open to the public.
The concerts are being presented by the Missouri S&T Student Union Board & St. Pat's Board. For more information, please contact Tim Chapman, Concert Director, at 618-567-1337, or visit http://stpats.mst.edu/events/concert.html.
One unusual aspect of the St. Pat’s Parade is that the surface of Pine Street is actually painted green beginning at 6:30 a.m. the day of the parade. The St. Pat’s Street Painting Event, sponsored by the St. Pat’s Board, includes the volunteer services of several students from Missouri S&T that apply the water-based green paint with large mops, and buckets so Pine Street properly painted green for the parade later that morning at 11 a.m.
The tradition of St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in Rolla for over a century. St. Patrick, the patron saint of engineers, marked his first Rolla celebration in 1908 on what was then the Missouri School of Mines campus. Engineers rallied around St. Pat and began what is now one of the most noted and oldest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the nation.
For more information regarding the St. Pat’s Parade and related events and festivities, please visit the St. Pat’s Board homepage online at http://stpats.mst.edu/events.

RPD to participate in
Youth Safety Belt
Enforcement Campaign
March 15-31
The Rolla Police Department announced today they are joining with statewide law enforcement March 15-31 for an aggressive youth seat belt mobilization to crack down on Missouri’s seat belt law violators and to reduce highway fatalities.
Only 67 percent of Missouri teens wear their seat belts when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Eight out of 10 teens killed in traffic crashes are unbuckled.
Under the Graduated Driver License law, teens are required to wear their seat belt and it’s a primary offense, meaning they can be pulled over solely for not wearing their seat belt.
“Local motorists should be prepared for stepped up seat belt enforcement,” said Sgt. Tim Mayfield. “We’ll be out there to remind you seat belts can – and do – save lives.”
Seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.
Buckle Up and Arrive Alive. For more information on Missouri seat belt usage, please visit www.saveMOlives.com.

Rolla Police Dept.
cracking down
on impaired drivers
March 16-18
The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities. In 2011, 220 people were killed and 916 seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver. That’s why the Rolla Police Department will join other Missouri law enforcement agencies to crack down on impaired driving March 16-18.
The Rolla Police Department will participate in statewide sobriety checkpoints and DWI saturation patrols enforcing Missouri’s DWI laws and keeping impaired drivers off the road.
“Driving impaired is simply not worth all the consequences,” said Sgt. Tim Mayfield. “Our message is simple and unwavering: Drive sober or Get Pulled Over.” For more information, please visit www.saveMOlives.com.
