Roundabouts transform Kingshighway/I-44 Interchange

The dual roundabouts currently under construction by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) at the Kingshighway/I-44 overpass are quickly transforming the look, feel, and image of this highly traveled east bound exit into Rolla off I-44.
The roundabouts and ramps open what is a rather congested area that will improve traffic mobility, improve safety, and provide a much more attractive entrance to the west side of the City. In addition, the roundabouts provide visibility and access to the 90-acre commercial development located off Old Wire Outer Road on the north side of the Kingshighway/I-44 overpass. Other progressive cities such as Jefferson City, Columbia and Springfield are using roundabouts to help improve traffic flow, encourage development and improve the aesthetics of their cities with much success. According to news releases by MoDOT, the roundabouts should be completed by late December 2011. The City joins MoDOT in asking the public to continue to use caution traveling through this area and observe all warning and road signs that indicate ramp closures, etc.
On the east side of Rolla a roundabout is being constructed by the City’s Public Works Department at the corner of 18th Street and Forum Drive. After the installation of new storm sewer pipe, the Department is beginning to lay a foundation of gravel and will soon be closing down the intersection for further road and concrete work. The City will continue to keep the public informed of this project, as well as the storm sewer work being constructed on the west side of Forum Drive from 18th to 10th Streets. After the storm sewer work and roundabout is complete later this fall, the City will apply an asphalt overlay over this entire area on Forum Drive. The City greatly appreciates your patience and understanding as the City completes these much needed and important infrastructure projects that will greatly enhance storm drainage, traffic flow and safety along Forum Drive.
Looking ahead later this year I’m pleased to announce The Way We Worked, the newest Smithsonian Institution exhibit to travel through Missouri with the Missouri Humanities Council’s Museum on Main Street program, will make its next stop in Rolla, Missouri at the The Centre (1200 N. Holloway Street) from Nov. 19 through Dec. 17, sharing the stories of how work became a central element in American culture and the many changes affecting the workforce and work environments over the past 100 years.
The exhibition focuses on why we work and the needs that our jobs fulfill, featuring multiple interpretive opportunities for visitors through large graphics, audio components, relevant objects and work clothing. In addition, the exhibition explores the tools and technologies that enabled and assisted workers, which led to a faster, more complex and often more stressful work environment, the diversity of the American workforce, and how individuals and communities identify themselves with work.
Visitors are free to travel through the exhibit on their own or with a guide. Guides help visitors personally connect to the exhibit through conversations and observations on the exhibit themes. The Way We Worked will begin in Ste. Genevieve at The Bolduc House Museum from Oct. 8 - Nov. 5, 2011 and will continue the tour in Rolla from Nov. 19 - Dec. 17. For more details about The Way We Worked exhibit tour and associated calendar and special events planned for each site, contact the Missouri Humanities Council at 800-357-0909 or view the Missouri Humanities Council website at www.mohumanities.org.
Have a safe week!
